Technical Overview

Wire Retention Is Not a Universal Safety Rating

Wired glass is soda-lime silicate glass formed around an embedded steel wire mesh. The mesh can retain cracked sections and may support integrity-only fire performance when the named product is installed in its tested frame and size.

Traditional wired glass must not automatically be specified as human-impact safety glazing. Polished wired glass quality standards and a fire-rated assembly listing answer different questions.

Before quoting a door, sidelight or fire openingProvide jurisdiction, required fire classification and duration, impact classification, listed frame, pane dimensions and the exact certification or test report required.

Check the Evidence Before Selecting the Glass

This tool screens the information required for review. It does not determine code compliance.

Specification review

General Product Review Can Proceed

Confirm thickness, surface, wire pattern, pane size and edge condition. Also verify that the location is not governed by a fire or impact-safety requirement.

Send the drawing and installation location.
Product Types

Surface and Wire Pattern Are Separate Decisions

Visibility comes from the glass surface; the architectural grid comes from the embedded wire.

Polished Square / Georgian

Clearer vision with a regular horizontal and vertical mesh. Specify alignment where adjacent panes share an elevation.

Polished Diamond Wire

A diagonal crossing mesh with a distinct traditional industrial appearance.

Patterned / Obscure Wire

Rolled texture diffuses the view while transmitting light. Pattern and wire layout must both be named.

Parallel Wire Glass

Directional straight wires create a cleaner linear pattern for selected screens and interiors.

Technical Education

Fire Integrity and Human Impact Are Different Tests

A fire-protective test evaluates whether the glazing assembly limits passage of flame and hot gases for a stated duration. An impact test evaluates breakage behavior when a person strikes the pane. Passing one does not prove the other.

The frame, glazing material, stops, setting blocks, sealants, pane size and installation are part of a fire-rated system. The correct purchase description must identify the tested assembly and a separate impact classification wherever the opening is a hazardous location.

Wire Position & Quality

Inspect the Mesh as Part of the Pane

ISO 16293-3:2017 covers dimensional and minimum quality requirements for polished wired glass, including optical, visual and wire faults. A compliant base product still needs separate fire or impact evidence where required.

Use the Location to Define the Evidence

The same-looking pane can be acceptable in one opening and prohibited in another. Approval is based on the complete requirement, not appearance.

Confirm the Final Pane Before Cutting

Wired glass has a narrower fabrication envelope than conventional float glass. Rectangular cut sizes, edge seaming and grinding can be reviewed by product. Holes, complex notches, heat treatment and polished exposed edges should not be assumed available.

Procurement FAQ

Wired Glass Questions

Clear answers about product, fire and impact claims.

Is all wired glass fire rated?

No. Fire performance belongs to a named glazing product installed within a tested assembly and within its approved size and duration.

Is standard wired glass impact-safety glass?

No. Traditional wired glass must not automatically be used where a human-impact classification is required. Specify and verify a certified safety grade.

What does ISO 16293-3 cover?

It covers dimensional and minimum quality requirements for polished wired glass, including optical, visual and wire faults. It is not a fire-resistance or impact-safety classification.

Can wired glass be used in doors?

Only when the exact product and glazing assembly satisfy every applicable fire and impact requirement for that door and jurisdiction.

Can wired glass be cut to size?

Rectangular cut sizes are available by product. Confirm final dimensions, wire orientation, edge condition and certification constraints before cutting.

What should be sent for quotation?

Provide thickness, surface, wire pattern, pane size, quantity, edge, opening type, frame, fire duration, impact classification, jurisdiction and required certificates.

RFQ Preparation

Name the Product and the Required Rating

Do not submit “6 mm wired safety glass” as the whole specification. Add the wire pattern, surface, opening and evidence.

Include these details:
  • Polished or patterned surface
  • Wire pattern and orientation
  • Thickness, size and quantity
  • Edge condition and frame
  • Fire classification and duration
  • Impact classification
  • Jurisdiction and listing requirement
