Solar Glass For Photovoltaic And Building Energy Applications

Solar glass is a special kind of low-iron glass made to let as much sunlight through as possible. Ordinary clear glass contains a small amount of iron, which absorbs part of the light and gives the glass a faint green edge. Solar glass lowers that iron content, so more of the sun’s energy reaches the cell or absorber behind it. It’s rolled with a textured surface to cut reflection, then tempered for strength and coated to push transmittance even higher. Whether it’s a rooftop module, a solar collector, or a building façade, solar glass is the layer that decides how much sunlight your system can actually use.

Solar Glass Product Families

Photovoltaic Module Glass

This is the front cover glass that protects the solar cells and lets sunlight reach them. It's made from patterned low-iron glass and tempered for strength. Standard modules use 3.2mm glass, while double-glass and bifacial modules often use thinner 2.0mm or 1.6mm glass on both sides.

BIPV Glass

Building-integrated photovoltaic glass turns a façade, skylight, or canopy into a power source. The cells are sealed between two layers of tempered glass, forming a safe laminated panel that also generates electricity. You can choose the cell spacing, color, and pattern to match the look of your building.

Thin Film Solar Glass

Thin film solar glass is the base that thin film cells like CdTe, CIGS, and amorphous silicon are built on. It usually comes coated with a transparent conductive oxide (TCO), such as FTO or AZO, which forms the electrode layer. Because the cell is grown straight onto the glass, the surface needs to be very flat and clean.

Patterned Low-Iron Glass

This is rolled glass with a textured surface and very low iron content. The texture cuts down reflection, and the low iron lets more light through. Most other solar glass types start from this base.

Fully Tempered Glass

Tempered solar glass is heat-treated to make it much stronger. It resists hail and wind load better, and if it ever breaks, it shatters into small, safe pieces. Tempering is required for both module testing and building use.

Dual-Glass (Glass-Glass) Laminate

Here two thin tempered panes are laminated around the cells, with glass on the back instead of a plastic backsheet. This makes the module more durable, keeps moisture out, and lets bifacial panels collect light from both sides.

AR-Coated Solar Glass

This is patterned glass with an anti-reflective coating added on top. The coating reduces reflection across the working range and adds about 2.5% more transmittance compared with uncoated glass.

Anti-Glare / Diffused Glass

This glass scatters light instead of reflecting it in a sharp beam. It's used where glare needs to be controlled, like façades near roads or airports, and in greenhouses where soft, even light is better for plants.

TCO-Coated Glass

This glass comes pre-coated with a transparent conductive oxide. The coating works as a see-through electrode layer, which is what thin film and heated-glazing applications need.

Solar Glass Processing Capabilities

From raw low-iron glass to a finished panel, we handle every step in house. We cut the glass to size on CNC tables, including notches and cut-outs, then grind, seam, or polish the edges to suit how the panel will be used. Any holes for mounting points or junction boxes are drilled before tempering, because once the glass is toughened it can’t be machined anymore.

We temper the glass to give it the strength and safety your application needs, and we keep it flat so it laminates cleanly. After that, we add the finish you’re after — an AR coating to lift transmittance, a TCO coating for thin film, or lamination with EVA, POE, PVB, or SGP, depending on the job. We can also screen print ceramic frit for borders, busbar masking, or shading patterns, which is fired into the glass during tempering so it never wears off. Every panel is checked for transmittance, size, and optical defects before it’s packed and shipped.

How To Choose The Right Solar Glass

1.Start with energy yield. If higher power output is the priority, choose low-iron glass and consider adding an AR coating to improve transmittance. In dusty, desert, or dry outdoor sites, an anti-soiling coating can also help reduce surface contamination and long-term cleaning needs.

2.Choose the structure based on the panel design. Single tempered solar glass is lighter and more cost-effective for framed rooftop modules. Glass-glass laminated panels are heavier but offer better durability, moisture resistance, and longer service life. For BIPV façades, skylights, canopies, or overhead installations, laminated glass is usually the safer choice.

3.Match the thickness to wind, snow, and weight requirements. Thicker glass offers better load resistance but adds weight to the mounting system. Thinner glass can be used in double-glass laminated structures, where lamination helps improve overall strength.

4.Confirm key specifications before production, including transmittance, coating type, thickness, flatness, edge quality, dimensional tolerance.
